Newport
is a small town located in Pend Oreille County in the northeast corner of Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,921 residents. The town of Newport was officially incorporated in 1902 and serves as the county seat for Pend Oreille County. This is one small town that is big on attractions. Located in one of the most beautiful areas of the state of Washington, Newport is bordered to the north by Canada and to the east by the scenic panhandle of Idaho. The north flowing Pend Oreille River travels approximately 60 miles through the county, offering visitors even more opportunities to enjoy the splendor of the outdoors. Whatever the season, there is something to do in the city of Newport. Dozens of lakes and miles of lush forests offers dozens of activities and great photographic opportunities. There is a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife in the area, including deer, elk, bear, mountain sheep and goats, cougar, osprey, geese, duck, crane, heron and bald eagles. Just some of the outdoor sports in Newport include fishing, boating, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, snow skiing and snowboarding, sledding, ice skating, hiking and rock hounding. History buffs can explore back roads, old logging camps and pioneer homesteads. If you're more the indoors type, Newport has shopping and museums, including the Pend Oreille County Historical Museum. Nearby attractions include the Silverwood Theme Park and Cat Tales Zoological Park & Training Center, home to a Royal White Bengal Tiger of India.

Northwest Washington, near Olympic National Park, , is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Hood Canal and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Olympic Peninsula is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. The region is divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains and the temperate rainforest. No other place in the United States can match its diversity in terrain and weather in such a compact geographic area. Therefore, weather in this region is very difficult to define. The coastal areas have mild weather year round with low coastal fog. Mount Olympus receives a large amount of snow. The rainforest receives annual precipitation of about 150 inches, making this the wettest area in the continental U.S. (the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii gets more rain.)
