Seattle
Seattle is the largest city, not only in the state of Washington, but in the whole Pacific Northwest. It's also the northernmost major city in the continental United States. Seattle is located on an isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington about 100 miles south of the Canadian border. As of April 2009, the population was approximately 617,000, within a metropolitan area of more than four million. The Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are major gateways to the rest of the world. The Space Needle in Seattle is the city's most recognizable landmark and dates from the Century 21 Exposition in 1962. It has been featured in the background of several movies and television series. Seattle hosts numerous special events throughout the year, among them the 24-day Seattle International Film Festival, Northwest Folklife over Memorial Day weekend, many Seafair events during July and August, including the Seafair Cup Hydroplane Races, one of the largest Gay Pride festivals in the U.S., and the art and music festival Bumbershoot over Labor Day weekend. Others include several Native American Pow-Wows, a Greek Festival and other ethnic festivals. Seattle has dozens of museums and art galleries, the Woodland Park Zoo and the Seattle Aquarium, located on the downtown waterfront. The Seattle Underground Tour is an exhibit of places that existed prior to the Great Fire of 1889. Seattle's mild climate allows for year-round outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling, boating and sailing, kayaking, rock climbing and more. The largest park in the city is Discovery Park, with 535-acres of forests and trails that wind along bluffs and beaches. Myrtle Edwards Park is on the downtown waterfront and Seward Park runs along the shoreline of Lake Washington.

Northwest Washington , near the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands, has a fairly temperate climate. The temperature of the salt water surrounding the islands doesnft vary greatly throughout the seasons, so it helps cool the air surrounding the islands. Northwest Washington experiences frequent cloud cover, fog and drizzle. Misty morning will be followed by partial clearing and occasional showers. An umbrella always comes in handy. Evenings are usually warm with a light ocean breeze. Temperatures range from low 30s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Coastal conditions are generally much more harsh than those in the Puget Sound.
