Roslyn is a small town located in Kittitas County in central Washington. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,017 residents. Founded as a coal mining town in 1886, the little town of Roslyn gained fame in the early 1990s for being the setting of the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska in the television series, "Northern Exposure." Outdoor scenes were filmed here, and many citizens of the town appeared as extras in the series and some had small parts. The Roslyn Historical Cemetery, which is actually 25 separate, but adjacent cemeteries, is clustered on 15 acres of woods and hills above the main street of town. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Other attractions in Roslyn include the local coal mining museum and the Miners Memorial, located across from the town hall. The Coal Miners Trail originates in the town of Cle Elum and passes through Roslyn before ending in Ronald. The trail follows the original Northern Pacific Railway line. The Brick Tavern is both historically interesting as the oldest operating tavern under a single name in Washington, and it was also used for many scenes in Northern Exposure. Nearby Salmon La Sac is a natural area along the Cle Elum river that is used for kayaking and provides access to the wilderness backcountry. The rustic, small town atmosphere of Roslyn will no doubt soon change, as some of the nearby forest and land has been sold to two development companies. Condominiums and an extensive golf course community are planned for the area.
