Port-Townsend
is located in Jefferson County in northwest Washington, approximately 40 miles northwest of Seattle. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,334. The city of Port Townsend is known for its scenic beauty at the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula and for its historic significance. The Port Townsend Historic District is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. This sleepy little town makes a perfect weekend getaway. It is accessible by a 45-minute ferry ride from the Edmonds terminal north of Seattle, or by car. Called a "Victorian Seaport and Arts Community," Port Townsend is a maritime center for independent boat builders and related crafts and industries. The town is noted for its' vast collection of Victorian homes and other historical buildings. One of the most stunning is the Jefferson County Courthouse, a spectacular representation of the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style. In addition, Port Townsend is recognized as one of only three Victorian seaports on the National Register of Historic Places. Events in the town include an annual blues and jazz festival, a wooden boat festival, regattas and weekly boat races and an independent film festival in September. Port Townsend also has a lively arts scene, and is home to many galleries and a monthly Arts Walk. Recreation in the area includes boating and sailing, cycling, hiking, birding, beachcombing, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing and shell fishing and golf.

Northwest Washington has summers that are cool and comparatively dry and winters are mild, wet and cloudy. During July and August, the driest months, it is not unusual for two to four weeks to pass with only a few showers; however, in December and January, the wettest months, precipitation is frequently recorded on 20 to 25 days or more each month. Snowfall is light in the lower elevations and heavy in the mountains. During the wet season, rainfall is usually light to moderate and continuous over a period of time rather than heavy downpours for brief periods. During the latter half of the summer and early fall, the lower valleys are sometimes filled with fog or low clouds until noon, while at the same time, the higher elevations are sunny.
