Pacific-Beach
is the name of an unincorporated community located in Grays Harbor, nestled between the Olympic Forests and the Pacific Ocean. The population is less than 1,000. It is about 18 miles north of the city of Ocean Shores on SR 109. Pacific Beach, along with its neighbor, Moclips, is called "Washington's Best Kept Secret," by the North Beach Business Association. The biggest draw to the area is the flat, wide beach that stretches between the two towns. Pacific Beach got its start as a sawmill town in the mid-1800s, but was always somewhat of a resort town. Settler Henry J. Blodget, who homesteaded 160 acres, gave part of his land to a friend of his, P.H. Roundtree, with the stipulation he build a $500 home. Roundtree actually built an $800 house, which later became the site of the Pacific Beach Hotel. In 1902, the Northern Pacific Railway got right-of-way to Pacific Beach and it soon became a popular destination for Sunday train excursions by people from Aberdeen and Hoquiam. Some came from as far away as Seattle. In 1906, the Pacific Beach Hotel opened and prospered as a resort destination until the Navy took it over during World War II. Flat and unprotected from nasty ocean storms, Pacific Beach and Moclips are about as close to the ocean as any town in Washington. Today, tourists enjoy Pacific Beach State Park, which is a 10-acre camping park with 2,300 feet of incredibly beautiful ocean shoreline. The beach in Pacific Beach is actually called Mocrocks.

West-Central Washingtion, along the coast, has mild summers and cold, wet winters. Severe storms hit Washington's coast during the winter, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves. Storms blow in about 70 to 100 inches of rain per year, the heaviest precipitation in the U.S. Coastal storm winds regularly top 40 miles per hour. During the summer, fog often moves in along Washington's coast. As the Pacific High, an area of high pressure, cools off over the Pacific Ocean, low stratus clouds form. At night, these clouds move inland as fog. This fog often burns off by mid-day, giving way to sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
