Mazama is a small village nestled in the Methow Valley in northeast Washington along the Methow River. Mazama is about 13 miles northwest of Winthrop and only 28 miles from the Canadian border. The population of Mazama is approximately 230 full time residents. Located on the eastern flank of the Cascade mountain range, forests of Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine cover Mazama and the surrounding area, which is home to one of the worlds longest cross-country skiing trails, stretching for 120 miles. The ski trail runs right through the town of Mazama. The town's elevation is 2,178 feet and it is located 2.7 miles south, and 4,700 feet below Goat Peak. Goat Peak is a 6,821-foot high peak in the North Cascades in an area designated as the William O. Douglas Wilderness. The mountain is a popular day hike in the summer months, being that the summit offers broad views of the Methow River Valley as well as many of the other prominent cascade peaks including glaciated Silver Star Mountain. The Methow Valley is filled with all kinds of outdoor recreational opportunities. Other than those already mentioned, you will find biking, camping, rock climbing, horseback riding, golf, fishing, ice skating, sledding and more. Hot air ballooning is another unforgettable experience offered in the Methow Valley and a wonderful way to capture a bird's-eye view of the spectacular landscape of the region.

Mazama Weather & Climate

Northeast Washington, near the Canadian border, generally has a humid continental climate. Cold air moving southward through Canada will occasionally cross the higher mountains into northern Washington. Although it receives a lot of rain, summers are quite dry. This region is occasionally subject to unusual and harsh weather due to an upper level trough that drives down cold Arctic air from the Canadian interior. This cold air mass can collide with a Gulf of Alaska cold front and create high winds, ice, snow, or heavy rains. Another weather phenomenon, known as the "Chinook wind," happens in the autumn and winter. Unusually warm and steady wind comes out of the south. It is essentially a reverse "Nor'Easter." A Chinook wind following a northeast wind can melt significant snow accumulations very quickly, pushing drainage systems to their limits.
