Gold-Bar
is a city in Snohomish County with a population of 2,371. Gold Bar was a prospectors camp in 1889 and was named after traces of gold were found on the river's gravel bar. When the Great Northern Railroad was being built, Gold Bar became a construction camp for the workers. Wallace Falls State Park, a 4,735 acre camping park, borders the Wallace River, Wallace Lake, Jay lake, Shaw Lake and the Skykomish River. A 265 foot waterfall, as well a few other smaller waterfalls, is located within the park. The Skykomish River provides fishing and river rafting. Wallace Falls State Park provides nature study, tent camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Mount Pilchuck, with a peak at 5,000 feet, has a historic fire lookout tower at its peak. Bridal Veil Falls is a 1,328 foot waterfall. Access to Bridal Veil Falls is by a long, continuously up hill hike over rocky terrain with some streams to cross. The North Cascade Mountain Range extends into Snohomish County. Whitehorse Mountain near the western edge of the North Cascades is a popular mountain for climbing.

Northwest Washington, near Olympic National Park, ,is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Hood Canal and on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Olympic Peninsula is anchored by the Olympic Mountains. The region is divided into three basic regions: the Pacific coastline, the Olympic Mountains and the temperate rainforest. No other place in the United States can match its diversity in terrain and weather in such a compact geographic area. Therefore, weather in this region is very difficult to define. The coastal areas have mild weather year round with low fog. Mount Olympus receives a large amount of snow. The rainforest receives annual precipitation of about 150 inches, making this the wettest area in the continental U.S. (the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii gets more rain.)
