Friday-Harbor is the major commercial center on the San Juan Islands. Friday Harbor is the county seat for San Juan County and it has a population of 2,082. San Juan Island was claimed by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1845. Friday Harbor was named after Joseph Poalie Friday, a native Hawaiian who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. Ships and steamboats from the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet visited Friday Harbor on a regular basis, delivering mail, freight, and passengers. With over 247 days of sunshine per year, there are plenty outdoor recreational activities and culture to choose from: museums, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, shops, galleries, and live theatre. Take a walk around the historic district and visit the Historical Museum. Outdoor activities include nature tours, sea kayaking, wildlife cruises, scuba diving, and birding tours. Orca whales make their home in the area waters and can often been seen from shore or from a tour boat. You can learn more about these whales at the Whale Museum. In addition to whales, you can learn about porpoises, sea lions, river otters, seals, and birds.
